Vinyl Acetate Monomer
- Vinyl acetate monomer is a chemical building block in the manufacture
of: polyvinyl acetate - used in formulating paints, adhesives, textile
sizings and coatings; polyvinyl alcohol - with applications in the
paper, textile, packaging, construction and photographic industries;
and ethylene - vinyl acetate copolymers - a family of materials used in
films, coatings, moldings and other applications.
Acetic Acid
- Millennium Petrochemicals uses most of the acetic acid produced at
its plant for the manufacture of its own vinyl acetate monomer. The
acetic acid, sold in the merchant market by the company, is used in the
production of vinyl acetate monomer, purified terephthalic acid,
cellulose acetate, solvents, pharmaceuticals, dyes and other chemicals.
Methanol
- Part of the methanol production at the LaPorte, Texas site is used to
manufacture acetic acid. The remaining methanol is sold on the merchant
market and used to manufacture MTBE ( a motor fuel oxygenate) and
formaldehyde, and as a solvent for chemicals, coatings, inks and
adhesives.
